Hare Today - raw pet food components
Hare Today offers raw meat and ground meat and bone products.
Their products are perfect for the pet owner that wants to
make their own raw food, but doesn't want to invest the time
to grind their own, or commit to purchasing a grinder.
Hare Today products are not nutritionally complete
food for cats! If these products will compose more
than 10% to 15% of your cat's diet, you must supplement the
food, as valuable nutrients are lost upon grinding and freezing.
The chub bags are all a double grind.
To learn how to make a nutritionally complete cat
food using Hare Today, go here.
An average-sized adult cat will eat 4 to 8 ozs of prepared
food daily. A pound of meat/bone/organ makes more than a pound
of food, assuming you add some water. A typical cat will eat
7.5 to 10 pounds of Hare Today a month.

Ground Mouse/Bones/Organs
Very fine ground whole mouse. Includes

An ideal whole prey food source for
cats and ferrets
A typical mouse will contain 2.4 mg/g
taurine or (for better comparison with the other values:
100 g would contain 240mg)
4 ounces of ground mouse would equal
over 2400 mg taurine
Recommended values of taurine for an
adult cat is 2500 mg per day.
Taurine figures are that of a fresh
mouse. There have been some studies that show taurine
levels will decrease from freezing. This is an approximate
analysis and NOT a guaranteed analysis.
An adult mouse is roughly 67 percent
water, has a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.1:1, has
3 percent carbohydrates, consists of about 57 percent
crude protein, and contains 23 percent fat.
Possibly nature's ideal cat food!

Dehydrated Certified Organic Catnip
Catnip, a member of the mint family,
is a harmless "high" for felines. Although
many cats will eat it, scientists say they're reacting
to the smell rather than the taste. Felines bite, chew,
rub against, and roll in catnip to release the volatile
oil trapped in the leaves. Catnip is harvested when
this essential oil production reaches its peak, and
leaves and fragrant flowers are carefully air-dried
to preserve essential oils at their best.
About 80% of adult cats -- including lions, pumas, and
leopards! -- react to this irresistible herb. The tendency
to like or ignore catnip is inherited, and it's true
that some cats are immune to its influence.
Certified organic, 5 ounce bags.

Making
a Complete Cat Food Using Hare Today
Making a complete cat food using Hare Today is SIMPLE!
Here are three of your options:
Option 1) Simply add a supplement called
Platinum
Performance, as suggested by Dr.
Hodgkins' book, "Your Cat". You can partially
thaw the Hare Today, add the Platinum Performance (about 2
teaspoons per pound of Hare Today), and water if desired,
and portion into baggies - or just add the supplement at mealtime
(1/2 teaspoon per cat).
Option 2) You can use the recipes at catnutrition.org
or catinfo.org.
A recipe isn't as daunting as it might sound. To use the complete
recipe, you'll simply add:
* Vitamin B-complex,
* Vitamin E,
* taurine,
* salmon oil,
* raw egg yolk, and
* water.
If not using a whole-carcass product (e.g., if you're using
the ground turkey legs/thighs), you should also add Vitamins
A & D (or liver).
To make the cat food, you'd partially thaw the Hare Today,
mix in the water and supplements, and portion into individual
meal-size baggies. (Similar to how many of you portion Feline's
Pride.) You could then re-freeze.
All the supplements
(all the additions except the water and egg yolk) are for
sale on my site. (You do not need many of the other ingredients
mentioned on catnutrition.org or catinfo.org, as most Hare
Today is whole carcass, including organs.) I even sell a shaker
cup for mixing them in.
My adaptations of the recipes - adapted to the one-pound
and five-pound sizes of Hare Today ground meat/bone/organ
- are here:
http://www.mousabilities.com/cats/food/recipes.pdf
Personally, this option is what I do. I make up about two
weeks of food at a time, and freeze in individual meal-size
portions. I have a video
of how simple this is!
Option 3) Add another supplement such as
Life Extension cat
mix. This supplement contains B-vitamins, vitamin E, taurine,
and freeze-dried egg yolk - so you could opt to use this supplement,
salmon oil,
and water, in lieu of the full recipe. I'd recommend you add
the supplement (and water, if desired) at mealtime, as this
supplement contains digestive enzymes which may speed spoilage.
Comparing the Life Extension cat mix supplement to the daily
recommended allowances for cats here,
it seems two scoops per day added to your cat's food at meal
time should be sufficient to create a nutritionally complete
food.
About
Hare Today
Hare Today is located in northwestern Pennsylvania. Hare
Today started as a small rabbitry (thus the name). Hare Today
is a small family run farm. They strive for a healthy environment
for all their animals without the use of hormones or antibiotics.
They believe that a healthy animal raised with plenty of pasture
space (rotational grazing) as well as good management techniques
does not require all the "preventative measures"
found in most feed lot practices. Fresh air, plenty of sunshine
and room to roam is by far the best way to raise livestock.
The rabbits are fed an alfalfa based rabbit pellet and are
housed in a colony setting in a modified green house. They
are not caged. They all receive non chemically sprayed timothy
hay free choice. Rabbits are humanley euthanized with carbon
dioxide and flash frozen at -30 degrees.
The chicken, turkey, pheasant, duck are USDA inspected ALL
NATURAL.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Bone size: Bone
bits obviously exist in the ground meat/bone/ organ product.
The size of bone pieces varies by the type of meat. Of the
products I carry, turkey generally has the largest pieces
of bone. Here are bone pieces collected from one pound of
ground turkey meat/bone, along with a US dime.
Stools on raw: When feeding a raw diet without grains, vegetables,
fruit, or other fillers, cats' stools will generally be much
smaller, dryer, and harder. They will also pass stool much
less frequently. (My cats generally have a bowel movement
every two or three days.) This is not a cause for alarm unless
you witness straining in the box or blood on the stool, which
indicates the cat is constipated. To relieve temporary constipation
as the cat adjusts to the drastic reduction in fillers and
fiber content, I suggest adding additional fat to the diet
(such as salmon oil) and/or an osmotic laxative such as Miralax
(available over-the-counter at most drugstores, 1/8 to 1/4
teaspoon per meal is the typical dose). Here are some typical
stools from raw-fed cats.
A picture below shows normal stool from raw-fed cats (to
the left) and stool from a cat fed a canned diet without fillers
(on the right):
